I Offed Two Snails Tonight

in the dark along the path.
They crunched into
the still night,
residued my sole.
I shuffled the
brick lest there be
more shells to mine.

I write tonight
in my favorite middle-of-the-night haunt,
the front garden (I think of it sweetly, the yarden)
[enveloped in green air]
under the street lamp
bright enough to light my way.
